  • MySQL Updated for Windows Services

    No comments April 14th, 2014 50 View(s)

Our MySQL services have upgraded to the latest available version. We’ve upgraded our MySQL services to 5.6.17. For a full list of changes, you may view the MySQL changelog at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/relnotes/mysql/5.6/en/news-5-6-17.html

Note that Oracle has skipped the MySQL 5.6.18 release for the community version of MySQL as the community build does not rely on OpenSSL for its SSL implementation; as a result it is not affected by the recent Heartbleed bug.

  • ASPnix – OpenSSL Heartbleed Vulnerability (CVE-2014-0160)

    No comments April 10th, 2014 150 View(s)

We’ve had a few concerned clients contact us regarding our current position and status about the OpenSSL Heartbleed vulnerability and after reviewing all software on our network we can happily say we are not at risk. Our web servers are all powered by IIS which does not use OpenSSL for its SSL implementation, SmarterMail and SmarterStats also use Microsoft’s .Net framework for their SSL implementation. SQL Server does not rely on OpenSSL either. The only software we currently use that relies on OpenSSL is PRTG (network and server monitoring systems) and our Gene6 FTP server services. Both applications use OpenSSL, but use a version that is prior to the 1.0.1 release that opened this vulnerability. MySQL itself (the community version) uses yaSSL instead of OpenSSL which is not known to suffer from this vulnerability.

Customers can rest easy knowing that we are not open to such vulnerabilities! If you have any questions or concerns about this vulnerability, please do not hesitate to contact us!

If you are curious to see if a specific website is vulnerable, you can use this website to test – http://filippo.io/Heartbleed/

Thank you again for choosing ASPnix!

  • MYSQL01 Outage Report

    No comments April 3rd, 2014 67 View(s)

US MySQL server MYSQL01 suffered from an outage earlier this morning. While we were able to restore the server itself, the MySQL service was failing to start. After a quick RAID verification the service was able to fully start and due to the crash MySQL had to perform a recovery on itself. The recovery completed and the MySQL service is now fully restored. No data appears to have been lost or corrupted, the recovery logs show all INNODB records were recovered and processed without any errors.

At this time we are performing a full RAID verification and repair to see if we can identify the disk that is failing and proceed to replace it. If we are unable to find the failing disk we will need to take down the server to check each drive’s SMART status in order to find the failing one.

Thank you for your continued patience during this time!

    No comments March 24th, 2014 227 View(s)

Due to our recent PHP security changes (disabling PHP’s mail function), WordPress websites that are not configured with an SMTP plugin are no longer able to send email. The fix is super easy and only takes a minute or two to complete.

    1. Install the following SMTP plugin “WP Mail SMTP” – http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/
    2. Configure the plugin’s SMTP connection settings per this article – https://aspnix.com/kb/windows-shared-kb/how-do-i-send-mail-from-my-website-on-windows-shared-services/
    3. Done!

Your WordPress powered website should now be able to send mail using our website mailer servers using SMTP.

  • PHP 5.6 now supported for Windows shared hosting

    No comments March 21st, 2014 72 View(s)

We are pleased to announce that we’ve now added PHP 5.6 to our list of supported PHP builds. While PHP 5.6 is still in alpha, we’ve been asked by many customers to deploy a 5.6 installation so they can test their applications and deploy applications that make use of this new version’s features and abilities. Since this is a separate version of PHP it makes it easier to deploy it without fear of causing harm / instabilities in the other PHP builds.

Please remember though, PHP v5.6 is not yet final, there may be bugs, instabilities, errors and other issues that may cause problems for your web application. Please do not use this version of PHP simply because it is the “latest”. We recommend PHP 5.3 / 5.4 for most applications.

If you have any questions, please contact our support department.

Thank you again for choosing ASPnix!
